Contestants walk in and it seems like a mystery box – but there is just one at the front of the screen. Jock says that the thing under the box is going to take their cooking to the next level – he lifts it and reveals a projector.
The projector plays videos from all the families of the
contestants and as expected everyone is crying. So this is what 10 Kishwars
taking part would look like.
Expectedly, they have to cook a dish today inspired by their
family today – yawn. This is getting old now.
Anyway top 2 dishes make it to the immunity cook.
Sabina is making a seafood stew with snapper, mussles and
scallops. Mel asks her how badly she wants top 2 Sabina gives some canned
answer like “really badly”. What do they hope to get from questions like these –
do they expect someone to say “not at all” or something like that?
Depinder is making a classic butter chicken, Minoli is
making black pork curry with dal and rice, and Scott, who is torn between
making a dish inspired by his cat and his partner, finally decides on making
his partner Andrew’s favourite dish, Braciole.
I’m really confused now about whether Kishwar is from
Bangladesh or India. Last few episodes she has been talking about Juhu beach
and ancestors from India and then saying she is all about Bangladeshi cuisine
in the next sentence.
And well of course she has started crying. Mel says they’ve
been seeing how Kishwar is evolving ….. presumably by cooking the same thing
all the time.
Kishwar is cooking for her totally Asian mom who is very “stoic”
– she says today is all about Bengali cuisine – which is super different from
what she done for pretty much every one of the last 47 episodes. How long a
rope are they going giver her?
Elise is making cannoli, and Pete is making a PB&J
inspired dessert – he is using interesting ingredients and is turning the bread
into ice cream and turning PB into bread.
Justin is making dal and rice – dal bhat. WTF. Talk about
phoning it in.
Minoli is making lamprais. Apparently Charmaine Solomon
taught Mel how to make Lamprais and because of this, Minoli thinks she needs to
make it as good as a professional chef once did. She wants to elevate the dish
– so well off course she’s adding apple chutney which she’s never made before.
Rest of the cook is mostly uneventful - Elise’s dough is
really dry, and then she screws up on her deep frying. Pete’s dish looks
awesome. Pete and Justin bro it out a bit as is customary these days for all
episodes.
The Tasting:
Justin – Still can’t believe this guy is serving dal and
rice. But Jock says its really good and is happy with the fact that he hasn’t even
served the rice properly but as a rice cracker. Which apparently makes this
insanely simple dish fun and different.
Kishwar has once again served 3 dishes – prawn soup, sardine
curry and rice. Jock says “thank you for
serving this” and adds that the dishes were delicious and well balanced. Ugh
she is going to win this one as well isn’t she?
Minoli and Depinder’s dishes are liked by all.
Jock likes Scott’s Braciole but hates his pronunciation of
the word. He does add though that this is normally done over a longer time.
Elise’s dish is bad as per everyone including herself.
Pete’s dish is awesome again. Jock loves the burnt toast ice
cream – says it was a great concept, great idea, and very well executed. Andy says its a very adult dish. Mel again
compares him to Heston – no pressure at all.
Sabina’s dish is brilliant. Andy says its perfect – and he would
not change a thing. Mel says if you gave this to Rick Stein he would be happy.
Jock says this is 3 star cooking. Jock has already told her its in the top 2.
Coming to the results – Sabina is well of course in.
Somehow, Kishwar is the second dish in the top 2 – and not Pete. I mean how can
you compare someone to Heston Blumenthal and then the commonest of Bengali fish
curries is better?
