MasterChef Australia - S13E46 - Surf n' Turf Team Challenge

Everyone is amazed at URBNSURF in Melbourne – no one seems to know or care that Andy owns Three Blue Ducks here.

Which brings to the worst news of this episode – Andy is in an apron – he is going to run the pass. 2 minutes in, and this is already my least favourite episode of this season.

There is some good news for the contestants though - there are no eliminations till end of the week. And there will be 2 chances to win immunity for that elimination.

The cooks have to make one shared entrée, two shared mains and two shared sides – each team has to cook for 80 people.

Andy is trying to show his legitimacy by saying that he is not his usual chilled out self in the kitchen, Three Blue Ducks reputation at stake etc etc – but still no one is taking him seriously.

He asks if the teams are ready – and everyone is visibly depressed that they have to spend the next few hours interacting with Andy.

Anyway – the teams for today are the Blue team – who will be cooking ‘surf’ – Sabina, Elise, Depinder, Scott and Pete. And the Green team – who will be cooking ‘turf’ -  Minoli, Justin, Linda, Kishwar, and  Tommy.

Justin is the captain for the Green team as this is what he wants to do. He seems to have found his feet in the competition – they are going middle eastern. They have a number of nice dishes like lamb ribs, beef cheeks, roast chicken, baba ghanoush etc.

For the Blue team, ghissu Elise is the captain and she predictably tries to suck up to Andy rather than play to their strengths. They are going Mexican for their theme today. They have a braised octopus, whole baked flounder, prawns, corn and a Mexican rice with grilled pineapple.

Linda and Kishwar are doing the beef cheeks in ras al hanout tomato sauce and Tommy is making the chicken by himself.

Poor Scott is on the butterflying job for prawns. Being nicest guy ever, he is still incredibly nice about being given this total thankless fuckall job of butterflying 180 prawns.

Andy is amazingly actually doing a decent job of this - giving advice, helping the teams and showing them how to do stuff.  He is truly enjoying all this attention.

Scot has done only about 30 prawns so far. He says he needs to take his time and get it right.

Ghissu Elise reveals her agenda of making Mexican by telling us that maybe Andy will offer us a job after this. (Narrator – He won’t). Andy is right behind her – and ignores this entire conversation and runs away.

Poor Scotty is on his own  - everyone else is on much more interesting things. Scott is saying he needs help – for some reason both Elise and Sabina are working on the flounder.

Scott tells Elise that he has finally sliced all 180 prawns but he hasn’t de-veined anything because of Andy’s advice. Elise, who as team captain has totally ignored this section for the last 3 hours while brownnosing to score a job, is wondering why alarm bells on this didn’t go sooner for her.

She has to take the call to ditch the grapefruit salsa and make an avocado crema.

Justin gets the beef cheeks out of the oven – and they are super tough. But the Lamb ribs are looking good. Andy is even helping them with the chicken.

Jock and Mel, starved of attention and coverage,  are trying to contribute to this episode by telling the contestants that the diners are here.

Pete almost drops his entire tray of the octopus giving everyone a heart attack. Elise says she is really proud of the octopus dish that she had nothing to do with while she was basically cleaning founder for 3 hours.

Entrée Tasting

Blue team’s Octopus is beautifully cooked. Jock says it is great attention to detail and every bite is delicious.

Green Team’s Lamb ribs are also delicious. Jock says it too close to call.

Back in the kitchen, poor Scotty is finally done with the prawns. And now sabina is noticing that Elise has fucked up her one job i.e. the cleaning of the flounder – and that they still have guts in them. Andy is now helping the Blue with the flounder.

Green team have a scare that their beef cheeks are not soft, but the ones at the bottom are perfect. So they start sending those out. For some reason they are putting yoghurt on everything.

Mains Tasting

Green team’s beef cheeks are excellent. Jock says the texture of the beef is amazing, and the flavour of the sauce is amazing. The chicken is tender, and has a nice smoky char.

Mel says this smells and tastes like teamwork – Jock totally does not hear what she says while he stuffs his face some more and says “Fantastic”.

Blue team’s flounder has the guts in. And the avocado crème is meh. Jock says it is a mixed bag – which is code for garbage.

Results

The Green team wins – pretty much entirely because of Elise’s terrible leadership.

Tomorrow is a Pressure test - which they have to write themselves – so….. not a pressure test. Also they have to make it sweet and feature vanilla.

MasterChef Australia - S13E09 - Heston's immunity challenge

Today is the immunity challenge and the contestants cannot believe the first such challenge is happening this late in the season. The contestants enter the kitchen which is empty but has a lot of screens. The judges are not even in the room – this honestly is a step up from the usual situation.    There is something funky happening here – disco scenes, psychedelic images (Conor thinks this is a rave), Dan thinks this is Reynold (who is really not big enough to call a superstar). This intro video now goes into the ‘uncomfortably long’ category and no one knows what’s happening. Aaron has spotted Fat Duck written somewhere and now everyone knows it is Heston. These guys really need to work on their build-ups such that the identity of the chef is not obvious from the start. Alas, the judges are here now. On the bright side, Heston does pop up and immediately makes fun of Jock’s dress sense saying he is dressing like a Scottish lord – someone who should be out shooting pheas...

MasterChef Australia - S13E20 - Curtis Stone Elimination

Here we go with another elimination. The contestants enter with no aprons which means something very random is planned for today. Jock wants everyone to bring a spring in their step because they should be happy about one of their friends going home. The last master they are bringing on to end this Masters week is Curtis Stone. Surely one of the main guys they would have wanted to meet – but since Curtis is in LA, this is going to be another pointless virtual presence type thing. Today’s elimination will take place in 2 rounds - the first one is all about beef. First Curtis will basically do what he has done on hundreds of Youtube videos that surely all the participants have already seen before even auditioning for this competition and prepare 8 cuts of beef. Fusion Dan has made the profound observation that cutting meat is not as easy as the professional butcher is making it look. Sabina raises her hand and asks what we do if we want to chuck a prize cut like Scotch fi...

Masterchef Australia - S13E14 - Immunity Challenge

Given that this is an immunity challenge, this should be a pretty up-beat episode. Andy is not going to be judging today – and this is already my favourite episode of the season so far. Jock and Mel explain the challenge   - it is all about thinking on feet and going with your gut. The table has 10 ingredients that the contestants can see and another 10 surprise ingredients paired with those that they can’t see. They have to choose an ingredient based on what they see and have to feature both the ingredients (including the surprise one) in their dish.   Dan is pumped and says whatever is thrown at him, he’s going to make the best of that situation. In other words, Fusion Dan is back after Jock specifically told him he hates Fusion Dan literally last episode.   Depinder goes first and chooses mango. Her surprise ingredient is chillies – actually a pretty common combo. She then rattles off some 100 ideas he has immediately on what all can be done. Dan has de...
